Friuli, a land of rugged karst abyss steep and narrow, filled with arguments required traffic jams and emotional, has been the focus of stories that, almost obsessively, discuss and make you think on the border conflict between the minority
of the differences between social and political identities.
A land that truly reflects the conflict of the soul of its people and works of art which originated here or who have been nourished. It would be presumptuous and useless to enumerate the vast number of films and novels, especially during the years between the late forties and the end of the fifties, told and made me think about the war and the border, but it is not a case such as the 'Far East' Italian is almost totally refractory
the theme of the play.
Perhaps the most important film work in these places was given birth in 1959, "The Great War" by Mario Monicelli, innovative film in which the director is assisted by the splendid performances by Vittorio Gassman and Alberto Sordi, dared to combine his war drama with the Italian comedies so far away from the essence of the rough and torn
Friuli-Venezia Giulia , desecrating a taboo subject for the first as the tragedy of 1915-18.
A journey into our past, through the eyes of two soldiers far from heroic and moving to places that were the focus of one of the major chapters of Italian history, from Gemona Sacile from Udine to Pordenone, to the legendary Piave, more ideological than actual border, but in the popular imagination is the true line of defense access to land-Julian released.
On the mountains were carved into the rock Carnia miles of trenches, tunnels and stations. Both the Italians that the Austro-Hungarians were to maintain its position at any cost and that was the reason that the conflict became a
exhausting game position on ropes, saddles, forks and ledges, where they waited for the false move of the opponent. And while it is true that the soldiers died in attacks or sudden desperate defense, it often happened that the greatest number of losses it had for the hardships caused by cold and hunger, by avalanches and landslides or dall'impietoso fall of lightning on peaks.
Monicelli's skill lies primarily in being able to maintain a certain distance so as not to lose sight of the collective background
also made countless appearances in local, as well as accurate and realistic battle scenes, but reconciled with participation able to capture every nuance of the soul and face of the two protagonists who flaunt a comedy made up of gags and dialogue that alternates in a disarming way to sadness and dismay that only the great theater of war where you can put in place the scene.
conceived by Luciano Vincenzoni, influenced by the story "Two Friends" by Guy de Maupassant, the film has the great honor of representing for the first time on the screen from any possible war purifies
fascist rhetoric, which persisted the myth of heroic and valiant soldiers ready to sacrifice for their country, while in reality there were miserable living conditions dictated by the great contrasts and differences in extraction cultural and, in particular, geographical, as was inevitable for a country born from such a short time.
For these reasons the film had many problems with censorship is at its stage of processing at the time of the release. It was a letter of Giulio Andreotti, then Minister of Defence, at the request of producer Dino De Laurentis, calmed the associations concerned about the gun so far to be the subject of vilification
and offended by the work.
Fortunately, the movie came out and had a great success, so as to receive the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and being nominated for an Oscar as best foreign film, but had also has the distinction, recognized even today, to become one of the best reconstructions from historical point of view of Italian cinema on the world war.
Today, 90 years have passed, but the mountains of Friuli remain an indelible evidence with their trenches, the forts, the mule tracks, along with other artifacts of the period, representing a wealth of historical indispensable. Walking on this "borderline" has a very particular taste, a flavor which is bound to the pain and suffering and that there must always be borne in mind that there was a high price paid by our grandparents for peace and freedom.
